 A deed document claimed to be dictated by Sathya Sai Baba in 1967 has surfaced, more than a year after his death in April 2011. The spiritual guru has willed in the deed that contributions received from devotees should solely be used for charity.
A copy of the document was tabled before the board of trustees of Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust in July by Sai Baba’s caretaker Satyajit Salian.
“Whatever is given to me by my devotees is under my management, supervision and control as a trustee to be used for public charitable purposes. This declaration I am making so that nobody can claim under or through me in the family properties,” said Sai Baba in his deed, dated 23 March 1967.

The deed was said to be dictated by Sai Baba in the presence of two witnesses—Indulal Shah, a chartered accountant and a member on the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust, and T.I. Shukla, solicitor and advocate, Bombay high court. Mint has reviewed the document.Shah, the only surviving witness, validated the deed’s authenticity in an affidavit filed on 21 November, according to Salian. Sai Baba also stated in the deed that he does “not owe or possess any personal property, wealth or estate” and he “relinquished” his interest and title on his family properties.
Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust manages assets estimated to be around Rs.40,000 crore, largely built through donations from devotees, and used for philanthropic activities. Sai Baba’s death sparked concerns of a potential void and a battle of succession in the trust. “It is a strong statement to deter family members of Sathya Sai Baba from claiming any of the trust’s property,” said an official of the trust, requesting anonymity.
The trust manages a university, hospital, religious museum, planetarium, railway station, airport and sports stadium in Puttaparthi, administers water supply projects in drought-prone districts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, runs educational institutions and conducts health clinics across India. The trust, with a presence in 165 countries, accepts only cheques or cash donations through banks.
