Alfred_Duraiyappah.JPGAsian Tribune’s smoking gun revelation: Interpol expert R. Suntha substantiates AT’s revelation on the shooting of Jaffna mayor

Chennai, 28 September, (Asiantribune.com):
Alfred Duraiyappah
An Interpol narcotics expert and a former Sri Lankan top police brass R. Suntheralingham, now based in Chennai,India, has confirmed the Asian Tribune’s recent revelation of the real identity of the killer of Alfred Duraiyappah, the former Mayor of Jaffna. Alfred Duraiyappah was gunned down on 27 July 1975, in the courtyard of Varadaraja Perumal Temple located at Ponnalai, in the Jaffna district.
Duraiyappah’s murder was the first ever high profile Tamil political murder by Tamils themselves in Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict and the event changed the very course of Tamil’s battle due to the violent nature of its expression and the unprecedented high profile nature of the target.
Up to-date, it has been speculated (and written over and over) by many writers that the former LTTE leader V Prabakaran was the man who fired the fatal shots at Jaffna Mayor Duraiyappah.
However, Mr K.T. Rajasingham, Editor of the Asian Tribune, in his testimony to Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission, on September 8 in Colombo revealed that the shooter was not the LTTE leader V Prabakaran as claimed as popularly, believed or ‘made to be understood’.
Mr Rajasingham, himself a resident of Puloly, Point Pedro, hailing from the very peninsular area where Alfred Duraiyappah as well as V Prabakaran hailed from, revealed that it was Kandeepan Amithalingham, the eldest son of Late A. Amithalingham (the leader of Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kadchi), who shot and killed Alfred Duraiappah to avenge the ‘poetical writings’ that were critical and targeted at Kandeepan’s mother.
Given below the full text of the letter sent by R. Suntharalingham to Mr. K.T.Rajasingham, Editor of Asian Tribune:
Dear KTR,
Well written news item on ‘Alfred Duraiyappah’s Murder’ and the history of Tamil Militancy.
Good material for the LLRC Commissioners to have a good background on the ‘Rise and Fall of Tamil Militancy’ in the North.
I agree with you that Prabhaharan was not the suspect in this case though LTTE and Prabhaharan were getting all the extra mileage.
As you may be aware, I was in Jaffna for a District Court case against a police officer for bribery during that week of the incident that took place on 27 July 1975. (Then I was the SP Colombo Crimes)
On the Prime Minister Mrs.Sriimavo Bandaranaike’s orders, I remained in Jaffna until the funeral of Duraiyappah was over.
When Mrs. Bandaranaike spoke to me when I was in Jaffna; she couldn’t believe the murder of Alfred Duraiyappah was committed by Tamil militants. The suspicion was also on the Tamil Minister Kumarsuriyar’s group and on the LSSP group of Visvanathan.
In fact, I visited the scene the next Sunday with CID Inspector Bastiampillai and our on the spot inquiry revealed among the boys, Amirthalingam Jnr was involved rather than Prabhaharan. On my return to Colombo, I met Mrs Bandaranaike and convinced her, as that was the beginning of the Tamil Group to targeting politicians.
Rest is history and well written by you.
I hope President Mahinda Rajapaksa will deliver the goods and speed up the process of rebuilding the North and East
Regards
Rama Sundaralingam in Chennai (Ex DIG)
