Adam Cooper: A Melbourne woman has wept in the dock after being jailed for 2½ years over a crash that led to a baby's premature birth and subsequent death.
Personal carer Dimple Grace ​Thomas, 32, was behind the wheel of a car which collided with one driven by Ashlea Allen, who was 28 weeks pregnant, in Cranbourne on August 8 last year.

Ms Allen suffered severe abdominal pain and underwent an emergency caesarean in hospital, but her daughter, Melarniah, died two days later.
Thomas should have turned left onto the South Gippsland Highway when leaving a car park after a gym workout, but instead drove across three lanes in an attempt to enter a gap in the central median strip and turn right, the County Court heard.

She did not see Ms Allen's car on the highway and the cars collided at about 60km/h.

Thomas, who was described by her lawyer as an inexperienced and nervous driver, told the court she was confused about the intersection and had thought a car at the median strip was making space for her to turn right.

But Judge James Parrish found the design of the intersection was "unambiguous" and made it clear cars leaving the car park had to turn left, and that Thomas had displayed a "wanton disregard for the law" in driving across the highway.

Thomas had been at the intersection many times previously, the court heard, and had always obeyed the law and turned left.
Her disastrous attempt last year would have meant a quicker trip home, the court heard.
Thomas, a former nurse and personal carer who has a young child, must serve 15 months before she is eligible for parole.
She also faces deportation to her native India after her release, a factor Judge Parrish acknowledged would add extra burden to her jail term.
Ms Allen and partner Christopher Oscuro previously told the court of their pain at losing Melarniah, who was to be a younger sister for the couple's two-year-old daughter.
Ms Allen said she had no memory of meeting Melarniah because of the medication at surgery, and instead had unanswered questions about the sound of her daughter's cry, whether her hair would be curly and whether her girls were destined to be best friends.
The devastation, she said, was something she would "never wish for any other mother to go through because the pain and suffering are too much".
"Our family should have been complete but is now forever broken," Ms Allen told the court.
Outside court, Ms Allen told reporters: "The sentence can never take back the fact we lost our daughter."
Thomas wrote letters to Ms Allen but prosecutors submitted they were sent in an attempt to minimise her culpability rather than a sign of remorse.
Judge Parrish accepted there were signs of remorse, and that her physical and mental wellbeing had deteriorated since the crash.
