It was a suyamvaram with a difference.
The event, meant exclusively for the physically challenged, seemed to attract even people without disabilities, including a fair sprinkling of Christians and Muslims who did not seem to attach importance to caste or religion.
“I own four shops, including an STD booth. Resources have never been a setback in my life. I don’t consider physical disabilities as a setback to leading a happy life,” said Kannan, who has studied up to Class 8.
The 32-year-old, who had come for the event from Kanchipuram, said he hoped to find his dream girl.
He was among the 25 people without any disabilities who attended the three-day mega suyamvaram that concluded here on Saturday.
The event, held under the aegis of the Tamil Nadu Differently-Abled Welfare Association since Thursday, attracted over 300 people, 210 of whom were men. Fourteen Muslims and 12 Christians attended the meeting.
“What was heartening at this suyamvaram was that all those who attended expressed their willingness to marry even out of their caste and religion,” association president N. Ravi said.
Despite their physical disabilities, grooms and brides-to-be, some of whom came with their parents, were well qualified. A few held BE or MTech degrees and most were employed in private companies.
Swathy, 25, who is physically challenged but holds an MBA and is employed in a private firm, said, “My life partner should be very caring all through our lives. He need not own a house. I can take care of him.”
Jayanthi, 32, banking on her tailoring skills and eking out a living on her own, said she nurtures similar aspirations.
