newindianexpress.com : Tamil Nadu once again ranks second in the number of suicides in the country with 16,122 cases reported in 2014, according to the Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India report that was released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Friday. மாநிலங்களவையில் எம்.பி.க்கள் எழுப்பிய கேள்விக்கு, மத்திய மனிதவள மேம்பாட்டுத் துறை அமைச்சர் ஸ்ம்ரிதி இரானி எழுத்துப்பூர்வமாக தாக்கல் செய்த பதிலில், ''கடந்த ஆண்டில் பல்வேறு மாநிலங்களில் 7,753 மாணவர்களும், யூனியன் பிரதேசங்களில் 315 மாணவர்களும் என மொத்தம் 8,068 மாணவர்கள் தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டுள்ளனர். இதில், அதிகபட்சமாக மகாராஷ்ட்ராவில் 1,191 மாணவர்கள் தற்கொலை செய்துள்ளனர். அதற்கு அடுத்தபடியாக தமிழகத்தில் 853 பேரும், மேற்கு வங்கத்தில் 709 மாணவர்களும் தற்கொலை செய்துள்ளனர்” என்று தெரிவித்து உள்ளார். 2014ஆம் ஆண்டு - மொத்த தற்கொலை என்ற கணக்கைப் பார்த்தால், இந்தியாவிலேயே தமிழகம் முதல் இடத்திலும், மகாராஷ்டிரம் இரண்டாவது இடத்திலும், மேற்கு வங்கம் மூன்றாவது இடத்திலும் இருந்திருக்கிறது. அந்த வரிசையில் தமிழகத்தில் அதிகாரிகள் தற்கொலையும் பெருகி வருகிறது. nakkheeran,in
Tamil Nadu, however, has shown a marginal decline of 2.9 percentage compared to 2013 in sync with the decline of 2.3 percentage across the country. Among the 89 cities included in the report, Chennai has the highest number of suicides with 2,450, followed by Bengaluru (2,033) and Delhi (1,753). Though the major reasons for suicides in Tamil Nadu, as in majority of other States, are family problems and illness, the State ranks at the top in some of the peculiar reasons. For instance, with 765 suicides, Tamil Nadu accounts for nearly one fifth of the 3,737 graduates who committed suicide in India. The second highest is in Karnataka with 368, followed by 331 in Maharashtra, 313 in Telangana and 292 in Kerala.
With 312 suicides, Tamil Nadu has the highest number of people who committed suicide due to unemployment, a position it shares with Maharashtra. With 1730 suicides, the State has also the highest number of suicides by persons who are unemployed, although the reason need not be unemployment. The State also has the second highest number of suicides committed due to Mental Illness (953 suicides) only next to Maharashtra (1037 suicides). This is despite Tamil Nadu claiming to have the best run District Mental Health Programme in the country.
Interestingly, suicides due to “Love Affairs” (which excludes extramarital relations) is the second highest in Tamil Nadu with 506 suicides, probably indicating the apparent increase in opposition to inter-caste marriages in the State. But what is more surprising is the highest number of suicides in this category is reported in Assam (519), where the total number of suicides is only 3546.
Contrary to the popular perception about the issue of alcoholism, Tamil Nadu reported only 552 suicides due to Drug Abuse and Addiction,
