thenewsminute.com :The DMK is scheduled to hold its general council meeting on January 4, 2017 at its party headquarters Anna Arivalayam.
There is speculation among certain sections that the party might decide on naming Treasurer and Karunanidhi’s younger son, MK Stalin, as its Working President, given Karunanidhi’s health condition.
Though Stalin's ambition is to take over as party president, Karunanidhi has consistently refused to make any such moves in the past.
"There is a lot of discussion happening on making Stalin, the working president of the party. I don't think there would be any opposition to that," a DMK leader told TNM.
Many leaders in the party like Duraimurugan have openly spoken in favour of Stalin taking charge completely. However, there has been resistance against such a move not just from Karunanidhi, but from party General secretary K Anbazhagan too.
"Anbazhagan has opposed Stalin's elevation strongly. He believes that Stalin cannot be made chief as he has not been successful in making the party win elections. Stalin camp tried to convince him in many ways, they even had Anbazhagan's grandson on their side. The grandson in turn tried to speak to Anbazhagan, but nothing has helped till now," said a source in the DMK.
It now seems that though Anbazhagan does not want Stalin to be elevated as President, he will agree to an interim arrangement of having a working President.
This will incidentally be the first meeting of the decision-making body since the party’s dismal performance in the May 19 state Assembly polls.
The meeting also comes in the wake of transitions in the AIADMK as a result of the death of former CM and AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa.
The general council meet was originally slated to be held on December 20, and chaired by party patriarch K Karunanidhi but was postponed due to his ill health.
The 92-year-old Karunanidhi who was admitted to hospital on December 17 due to a throat and lung infection, and was discharged on December 23.
Earlier, on October 25, the party had announced that the senior politician had developed a drug-induced allergy. Since, then Karunanidhi has been largely confined to his Gopalapuram residence. On December 1, he had visited hospital for ‘optimization of nutrition’ and ‘hydration’, and had returned to his residence after some days.
