டாக்டர் ஷாலினியின் பார்வையில் .... கனடா வருகையும் சலசலப்பும்

அவர் மீதான புரட்சிப் பிம்பம் வலிந்து உருவாக்கப்பட்ட ஒன்று. அவர் அந்தப் பட்டத்துக்கெல்லாம் தகுதியானவர் இல்லை. கியூபா மிக ஏழ்மையான நாடுகளில் ஒன்று. அங்கிருக்கும் வயது வந்த பெண்களுக்கு வேறு வழியில்லாமல் அவரவர் சொந்தத் தாய்மார்களே மாமா வேலை பார்த்துத் தான் ஜீவித்திருக்க வேண்டும் எனும் அளவுக்கு மிக மிக மோசமான அளவில் சீரழிந்துள்ள நாடு கியூபா. நாட்டில் இத்தனை பிரச்னைகள் இருக்க அதை ஒழித்துக் கட்ட ஒன்றும் செய்யாமல் சும்மா வேடிக்கை பார்த்தவர் தான் இந்த ஃபிடல் காஸ்ட்ரோ. உண்மையில் கியூபா மக்கள், ஃபிடலின் முகம் தொலைக்காட்சித் திரைகளில் ஒளிர்ந்தாலே தூவெனக் காறி உமிழ்வது தான் வழக்கம். ஆனால், இந்த உலகத்தின் முன் அவர் ஒரு புரட்சித் தலைவராகச் சித்தரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளார். என கியூபாவிலிருந்து வந்த மக்கள் தன்னிடம் தெரிவித்ததாக ஷாலினி தனது பதிவுகளில் பகிர்ந்துள்ளார்.

அது மட்டுமல்ல, டொராண்டோவில் தான் சந்தித்த ஈழத்தமிழ் மக்களில் சிலர், ‘ராஜிவ் காந்தியால் தான் தாங்கள் தற்போது உயிருடன் இருக்கிறோம் என்று நன்றிப் பெருக்குடன் கூறினார்களாம். அது மட்டுமல்ல பிரபாகரன் தலைமையில் நடைபெற்ற ஈழப்போர் தேவையற்று வெட்டிப் போர் என்றும் அவர்கள் தன்னிடம் தெரிவித்ததாக ஷாலினி தனது பதிவுகளில் பகிர்ந்துள்ளார்.
 Dr.Shalin : This entire trip to Toronto was full of learning, observations and understanding. It will take me years to talk or write about all of this in detail. Some salient points were:
1) My flight neighbour was Czech- Her Hindu assigned name was Shalini and she was full of praise for Hindu religion. She was a vegetarian and wondered what I thought about eating meat- especially cows. If all life is equal, isn’t the cow equal to a fruit? I was too sleepy for a detailed discussion anyway. Some other time Czech Shalini. Advaita on hold!

2) On reaching Toronto, from every Tamil I met, I learnt a piece of new information. We in Tamilnadu know of only one narrative. That the LTTE is a heroic organisation and Prabhakaran is the ultimate Tamil Icon. But the Srilankan Tamils have several narratives. Most people felt it was an useless war that yielded no outcome. Some pointedly told me that Prabhakaran was the quintessential Anti Social Personality who wantonly killed, terrorised and abused his own people to fulfill his megalomaniac greed for power. Many mothers felt the pent up rage- they had fled their country to protect their sons from being forced into warmongering, and daughters from being raped or murdered. They had no idea why they were put to so much suffering- the elders ached for their ancestral land, the youngsters with no idea about any of their pain felt it was way too much drama.
As a culture we have been erecting hero stones and singing praises of suicidal warriors- but the youth just understand it in one line : It is glorious to commit suicide. That’s not what we want them to think!
War is Testosterone running amok. Peace is Oxytocin flowing like a life giving river.

3) The Tamil women! Are so smart, dynamic and just so downright natural leaders. Only, they don’t seem to know their own self worth. They know of Bharathiyar- and his paper tiger Puthumai Penn. They don’t know of Periyar and his brand of Authentic Female Emancipation.
4) The men are disillusioned, over worked, traumatised and torn apart with conflicting feelings, thoughts and options. But high functioning. Remarkably resilient. And the promise for the future. Some treat their women with heart warming chivalry. Some need help to get there.
5) The kids are trained in Bharathanatyam, Classical music and all of them imitate Kollywood to a T. They don’t realise it is not even their own culture, that Kollywood is itself a cheap copy of Bollywood! But apart from the cultural confusions, the kids are super smart and poised to take on the whole wide world.
6) As a whole the Tamils are thriving, struggling and improving their fitness for survival. All they need is to choose smart memes and keep the long line of surviving genes going on forever.
7) We also are given to think that Fidel Castro is a great revolutionary. The people who have been to Cuba tell me this: Fidel was a fake hero too. His country is so poor that mothers pimp for their preadolescent girls - so bad is their poverty. And the Castros do nothing about it. And routinely Cubans spit on Fidel when he comes on TV
8) In Tamilnadu Ezha Tamilargal is an important election issue- but next time anyone tells us narratives of how the Congress Government let down the Tamils, remember folks- I personally heard from many Eelam Tamils, “It is because of Rajiv Gandhi, we are alive today” And many Eelars tell me, “What do you people know about us, that you take stands? And those men who killed themselves over our issue- they are misinformed!” Of course this will anger many. But hey, let’s not take sides yet. Let’s first read up on this. There are so many perspectives to this. Let’s become knowledgeable before we even come to conclusions.
9) The Labourers who emigrate to the Middle East are severely tortured, sexually and physically abused, and land up in India battered and broken. All for a paltry few thousands INR. The early morning flights are full of pathos, especially the women returning with burn wounds!
10) And just as I land in Chennai-Kamal Hassan has started a new party. And Rajnikanth will soon do the same.
Phew!! So much work for us Psychiatrists!
