BHUBANESWAR:
Followers of religious guru Asaram Bapu took out a rally and staged a
road blockade here on Monday, protesting against his arrest on charges of sexual assault. They demanded judicial inquiry into the allegations and immediate release of the preacher.
The two-hour road blockade resulted in traffic jams on NH-5 near Kuakhai bridge around noon as protestors sat on the road and raised slogans. "He was framed. All allegations are part of a conspiracy against him. Government should first probe into the allegations and not arrest him on the basis of allegations only," said Kedar Senapati, a follower of Asaram Bapu.
Members of Sri Yoga Vedanta Seva Samiti, Odisha chapter, have threatened to continue the protest until Asaram Bapu was released. "He is our God and we won't tolerate such false allegations against him," said Mamta Nayak, a follower of Asaram Bapu. His followers also threatened to stage an indefinite hunger strike if he is not released immediately.
People faced immense difficulties because of the road blockade. "We had an appointment with the doctor in Cuttack but could not reach in time," said Sangita Das
