ஈழத்தைச் சேர்ந்த குறைந்த சாதியுடைய இளைஞனை காதலித்த தனது மகளையும் அவருடைய காதலனையும் வானில் ஏற்றி சென்று தாக்கிய சம்பவமொன்று கனடாவில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. தனது காதலுக்கு தந்தை விருப்பம் தெரிவிக்காமையினால் குறித்த மகள் வீட்டை விட்டு வெளியேறியுள்ளார். அனிதா என்ற 16 வயதுடைய சிறுமியே 18 வயதுடைய தனது காதலனுடன் இவ்வாறு சென்றுள்ளார்.இதனையடுத்து அனித்தாவின் அக்காவான ஜெனிதாவும், அவருடைய கணவன் சுந்தரலிங்கமும் வீட்டைவிட்டு வெளியேறியவர்களை தேடிச் சென்றுள்ளனர். இதன்போது அவர்கள் கனேடிய பாடசாலை ஒன்றிற்கு அருகில் அவர்கள் கட்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.
உடனடியாக குறித்த இடத்திற்குச் சென்ற 43 வயது தந்தையான செல்வநாயகம் செல்லத்துரை தனது இளைய மகளையும் அவருடைய காதலனையும் வானில் இழுத்துச் சென்று மரத்தில் மோதியுள்ளார். அதன் பின்னர் தனது மூத்த மகளின் கணவரையும் அவர் தாக்கியுள்ளார்.
மகளின் காதலை ஏற்க முடியாத தந்தை மகள் மீதும் மருமகன் மீதும் தனது மினிவானால் மோதினார். தெய்வாதினமாக அவர்கள் உயிர் தப்பிவிட்டார்கள்
A Toronto dad admitted Thursday he used his minivan to run down his daughter, her boyfriend and his son-in-law because he disapproved of his daughter's boyfriend.
Selvanayagam Selladurai, 46, pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated assault for the June 1, 2007, incident in the city's Scarborough neighbourhood.
He was initially charged with three counts of attempted murder and other related offences.
His daughter, Anitha Selvanayagam, 16, went missing from home for three days due to the dispute about the boyfriend.
Her older sister, Jenitha, searched for them and found her sibling, her brother-in-law Lenin Sandrasingam, 21,and her boyfriend Prashanna "Pram" Anadarajah, 18, in a strip mall, said Crown attorney Eadit Rokach.
She said the accused rejected his daughter's boyfriend because he came from a lower caste in their native Sri Lanka.
Jenitha phoned her father to arrange a reconciliation.
Instead of a peaceful reunion, the accused drove his van towards the boyfriend.
Selladurai drove straight at the trio, striking them and dragging his daughter and son-in-law for five metres under his mini-van. The son-in-law, Lenin, suffered a broken pelvis in two places while the daughter suffered a head cut and shoulder injury.
Court heard witnesses depicted the driver as having "put the pedal to the metal" as he steered towards them.
The minivan crashed into a fence.
Selladurai chased the boyfriend, who suffered a broken ankle. The teen tried to escape across the street to a high school, where he collapsed.
"I'll kill you. I'll kill you," Rokach quoted the accused as saying to the boyfriend in front of several witnesses.
A teacher held off the angry father from charging at the injured teen until paramedics arrived and they had to restrain Selladurai.
Police then arrived and arrested the now 46-year-old man.
Selladurai, who has been on bail for three years, will be sentenced on Nov. 1.
