No animal sacrifices at kovil- Court rules
The animal sacrifice which was to be performed today at the Kali Kovil in Udappuwa, Arachchikattuwa was suspended on a court order yesterday (22). Puttalam Additional District Judge Mrs. I.D. Illangasinghe gave the restraining order after having considered a report filed by the Mundalama Police. OIC Mundalama Police IP Sujeewa Alawatta told court that he sought a court order restraining the animal sacrifice at the Udappuwa Kali Kovil to prevent any possible civil commotion.
Meanwhile, the Priests and the trusties of the Udappuwa Weera Badhrakali Amman Kovil had decided to abstain from following the age-old ritual of animal sacrifice and the offering of dana with meat to the devotees and said that they would instead offer a vegetarian meal to the many devotees who visit the Kovil.
The kovil authorities affirmed that their decision, taken on Wednesday (21) was not influenced by any threats but was a result of a discussion they had with police inside the Kovil premises. The spokesman also said that the police prevailed upon them on the legality of the animal sacrifice and that the priests of the Kovil in agreement decided to discontinue the ritual of animal sacrifice
