Mylvaganam Sooriasegaram : The present one man government, supported by his brothers, is now in serious crisis. Its popularity has now plunged to very low levels. I expect this trend will continue irreversibly because the rule by this family has systematically bankrupted the country through wreckless borrowing and wreckless spending over a long period.
In desperation the government is now embarking on more and more wreckless actions such as suddenly stopping the import of chemical fertilisers.
It was they who introduced the uncontrolled and wreckless use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in the first place at highly subsidised prices to farmers. All farmers had abandoned organic farming and got addicted to lucrative but unsustainable farming using high dosage of chemicals! The consequences of this disastrous and short sighted policy are too well known especially high concentrations of nitrates in drinking water and widespread kidney deseases, notably in Polannaruwa where thousands of kidney dialysis machines had to be imported in order to save lives!
Having bankrupted the country with no cash in the government treasury they are now forced to stop importing, among other things, chemical fertilisers all of a sudden, lying to people that they are promoting organic farming!
Rightly or wrongly, I have experienced instant love at first sight for women many times but never for organic fertiliser!
I like to contrast this to a real 'no strings attached' love story surrounding organic farming.
In 2009 Dr.Arumugam Kandiah, Dr.Ahilan Kathirgamar and me too as a passionate supporter of cooperative production and distribution of consumer items in Jaffna and around (I actually want this for the whole country) embarked on setting up cooperative industries with the active support of the then Cooperative Commissioner. Mythri government funded this project.
One of the industries we set up was to manufacture organic fertiliser. We set up three small factories, one in Velanai, one in Karaichchi South and another in Karainagar.
The story of Karainagar organic fertiliser production, which commenced on 22nd of May 2019, is being told below pictorially.
Compost is made from organic waste, dry vegetation, green leaves, cow dung, water etc.
Where ever possible we collect the half composted material from households and pay them per kg. So they too get regular income for their effort.
Capital invested: Rs. 9.9 M
Production: 3000 to 5000 kg per month
Workers: 2 no.
This government has so far not helped financially to this kind of projects.
We need to increase production in our 3 factories plus start factories in other cooperatives. Demand is much bigger than current supply.
Out of desperation they may help because farmers are starved for fertiliser!
The beauty of this type of small industry is this:
Local industry!
Serving the needs of local farmers!
Employment for local people!
Profits are always invested locally!
Environmentally friendly production!
No transport or advertising/promotion cost!
Locally available waste material gets recycled!
It can and must be done in every village in Sri Lanka!
