Southern Railway
has ordered suspension of On-board Houskeeping Services (OBHS) on at least 70 trains, multiple sources said.
The popular Chennai-Coimbatore Shatabdi Express and the Chennai-Bengaluru Shatabdi Express and the Chennai-Coimbatore inter-city trains will be among the nearly 15 of the 30-odd trains operated by Chennai division where the services will be suspended. In Salem division, the services have been suspended on all trains.

Only important trains which run towards New Delhi and other northern states, with a journey time of more than a day each, will continue to have house-keeping services.
This, the sources said, is because Sothern Railway does not have funds to pay the contractors who have not paid salaries to their staff for the past few months.
Southern Railway will calculate how much money can be saved by suspension of such services and later plan to stop maintenance of bio-toilets, pest control and management of linen given to passengers.
All these services are provided by the mechanical department, which faces a shortfall of around Rs 100 crore from budgetary grants. Southern Railway general manager Rahul Jain in a letter to the Railway Board chairman early this month indicated that they had funds to continue these contracts only till September.
Currently, housekeeping services are available on around 110 trains run by Southern Railway.
The OBHS was a system brought in by Indian Railways a few years ago wherein a staff member of the contractor concerned would travel on the train and would be available to passengers in case a complaint about unclean pathways, toilets or over-flowing dustbins was raised through an application.
A Southern Railway official said the decision to suspend the services was taken after a video conference meeting with the general manager last week.
“ This is a problem peculiar to Southern Railway as it is a hugely loss-making zone. Operating ratio [money spent to earn every Rs 100] is 160. We are a passenger intensive zone. How can we run the show without funds?” he said.
K Vasudevan, a regular train commuter, said coaches, toilets and dustbins will get dirtier. “With packaged food being sold on trains, garbage generation is higher and the old problem of rodents and rats in AC compartments will return. An alternative solution should be arranged soon,” he said
