thehindu.com : Raising objection: AIADMK MPs protesting in Parliament during the winter session on Tuesday. Opposition parties says All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is disrupting the House at the behest of BJP; AIADMK says Mekedatu issue is serious.
The Opposition parties on December 18 accused the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) of deliberately stalling Rajya Sabha proceedings for the fifth consecutive day on the bidding of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
As soon as the House assembled for the day, the AIADMK MPs trooped into the Well, protesting the Central Water Commission’s decision to give in principle nod to the Mekedatu dam on the Cauvery
river.

Pending notices

Chairman Venkaiah Naidu urged the members to allow the House to function as various notices on urgent matters, ranging from cyclones affecting lives in some States to price rise to agriculture crisis, have been admitted for discussion in the on going winter session. But he was forced to adjourn the house within 10 minutes due to the din.
Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’ Brien said the AIADMK is doing a favour to the government by disrupting Parliament so that no discussion can take place on farmers’ distress, jobs and break down of institutions.
Communist Party of India leader D. Raja said that even on a day when the Rajya Sabha was slated to debate the impact of cyclone Gaja on Tamil Nadu, the protests stalled the house, which makes one suspect the AIADMK’s intentions.

“The Cauvery issue is important. However, a discussion on Gaja cyclone was equally important. Why is AIADMK not willing to allow a debate on Gaja cyclone? Their intentions are definitely suspect,” he said.
The Congress joined in the criticism. “The AIADMK has been bailing out the BJP whenever things take an inconvenient turn for them Today when they face tough questions on Rafale aircraft deal, CBI, RBI and so on, the AIADMK is not letting the house function,” Congress MP B.K. Hariprasad said.
The AIADMK, however, insisted that its protests are genuine as Tamil Nadu will be left begging for water once the Mekedatu dam is built. Party MPs said their protests would continue till they get a concrete assurance that the nod for the dam will be withdrawn. Chief whip Vijila Sathyananth vehemently denied the Opposition’s allegations.
“The BJP too was unhappy with us. They wanted the House to run and wanted the bills to be passed. But we will continue our agitation because this is an issue of life and death for us,” she said.
Mr. Naidu initially adjourned the House till 2 p.m. But as protests continued after it reconvened, the Chairman adjourned proceedings for the day.
