The bell was photographed and copies sent to England and various people in India. Tamils in
Southern India immediately recognised the writing on the bell.The bell has been identified as a type of ship's bell. Some of the characters in the inscription are of an archaic form no longer seen in modern Tamil script suggesting that the bell could be about 500 years old. The bell is believed to have been cast about the year 1450. Archaic Tamil script on the bell has been translated as meaning, "Bell of the Ship of Mohaideen Bakhsh".

இது 15 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டுக்கு முன்னையதாக கருதப்படுகின்றது. ஆனால் நவீன உலகை பொறுத்தவரை இங்கிலாந்தின் ஜேம்ஸ் குக் எனும் கடல் ஆய்வாளர் 1769-ம் ஆண்டு தான் நியூஸிலாந்தை கண்டுபிடித்தார்.

நியூஸிலாந்து நாட்டில் வெங்கேரி என்னுமிடத்திடத்தருகே 1836ம் ஆண்டில் இந்த மணியை வில்லியம் கோல்ன்ஸோ கண்டுபிடிப்பதற்கு முன்னர் இதில் உருளைக் கிழங்கை சமைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தனர் நியூஸிலாந்து மௌரி இனப் பழங்குடியினர். வில்லியம் கோல்ன்ஸோ மௌரி இனப் பழங்குடியினரிடம் ஒரு இரும்பிலான சமையல் பாத்திரத்திற்கு இந்த மணியை பண்டமாற்று செய்து கொண்டார்.

The Tamil Bell is a broken bronze bell discovered in approximately 1836 by missionary William Colenso. It was being used as a pot to boil potatoes by Māori women near Whangarei in the Northland Region of New Zealand.

The bell is 13 cm long and 9 cm deep, and has an inscription. The inscription running around the rim of the bell has been identified as old Tamil. Translated, it says "Muhayideen Baksh’s ship’s bell". Some of the characters in the inscription are of an archaic form no longer seen in modern Tamil script, thus suggesting that the bell could be about 500 years old, possibly from the Later Pandya period.[1] It is thus what is sometimes called an out-of-place artefact.
