The world's cheapest smartphone, Freedom 251, costing just Rs 251 will be launched in the country on Wednesday by Noida-based Ringing Bells Pvt. Ltd.
It was earlier reported that the phone would be officially unveiled in New Delhi on Wednesday evening at an event that will be attended by Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, MP, with Union Defence Minister Sri Manohar Parrikar as the chief guest.
The phone comes with preinstalled government apps like 'Swachh Bharat'.
According to the company website, the device will feature:
1) 4-inch QHD IPS display,
2) 1.3GHz quad-core processor
3) 1GB RAM
4) 8GB internal storage (expandable up to 32GB)
5) 3.2-megapixel rear camera, 0.3-megapixel front camera
6) 1450mAh battery
7) Android Lollipop
8) 1-year warranty
The company had earlier stated that Freedom 251 smartphone has been developed 'with immense support' from the government and has been touting it as a success story of PM Modi's flagship 'Make in India' scheme.
Booking for this smartphone starts on Thursday, February 18 at 6:00AM, and the window will be open till February 21, 8:00PM.
At present, the cheapest smartphone available in the market is priced around Rs 1,500. Last year, DataWind had announced that it is teaming up with Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Communications (RCom) to launch the world's most affordable smartphone, priced at Rs 999. But, the phone is yet to be released.
