Yesterday’s second round of Local Government Election results confirm that the government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa has established confidence in democracy in the midst of the people of the North, who completely lost faith in the ballot due to the massive election violence and rigging perpetrated by the United National Party in the 1981 District Development Council elections, and forced them to take solace in the bullet. The United People’s Freedom Alliance has won a massive victory in the Local Government Elections held yesterday for 65 local government institutions. It has taken control of power in 45 local government bodys. The Tamil National Alliance has won 18 local government bodys and the balance 2 local government bodys have been won by the Tamil United Liberation Front.
In the local bodys that have been won by the Tamil National Alliance, the UPFA has become 2nd. The United National Party has failed to win a single seat in many of the institutions. The JVP has been completed wiped out in these areas as it has failed to win a single seat in the North.
In the Kilinochchi district in which elections were held after a lapse of 30 years, the United People’s Freedom Alliance has lost the Pooneryn village council only just by 138 votes and the Pachchilaipalli village council by 366 votes. Similarly in the Jaffna district the UPFA has lost the control of Karainagar village council to the Tamil National Alliance by only 114 votes.
In all counts this is a massive victory for the main constituent part of the UPFA, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party headed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as it has 67 seats against 170 seats won by the Tamil National Alliance.
