DOCTORS found 23 nails hammered into a 50-year-old housemaid who claims she was tortured by her Saudi Arabian employers for not working hard enough. The woman, identified as Ariyawathie, escaped back home to Sri Lanka after her ordeal saying that each time she wanted to take a rest because she was so tired, the family she worked for ''inserted a nail in my body as punishment''.Dr. Kamal Weeratunge, who was treating the maid at at the Kamburupitiya Base Hospital in the Matara district, 140 km from Colombo, claimed the nails had been heated up before they punctured her skin.
The woman said: ''I had to work continuously since I had to do the chores of all the occupants. I had to work from dawn to dusk. I hardly slept.
''They beat me and threatened to kill me and hide my body. They were really devils with no mercy at all.''
She said she finally managed to arrange her travel documents to return home on her own expense.
Authorities are now trying to track down the people she worked for.
